Have you become frustrated with outdoor painting?

Plein Air, or outdoor painting, has become one of the fastest growing and most exciting segments of the art industry, and for good reason – a photograph will never replace nature.

One of the most common requests we get here at Master Oil Painting, from our community of artists, is to help them grow their skills as Plein Air painters. They may not want to paint outdoors full time, but most artists would love to escape into nature periodically to enjoy a day, or even a few hours, of painting in the great outdoors.

However, getting away from the studio and painting Plein Air presents some unique challenges for aspiring artists.

For instance…

  • Scouting out the optimal spot to paint
  • Purchasing the right supplies and packing them to the site
  • Quickly changing light and color
  • Unpredictable weather conditions
  • Working around the inquisitive passersby
  • Finding an experienced and skillful teacher

Where can you find answers?

Since Plein Air only recently gained popularity, within the last 10-15 years, not many artists have the experience to teach it skillfully. That makes professional training hard to find – and often expensive.

You’re likely to spend anywhere from $600 to $3000 for a few days of group style workshop training…

But even when you have the funds available and and want to get started it’s difficult to find an experienced mentor willing to help.

A Little About Bill

MasterOilPainting.com was created to share what professional artist Bill Inman has learned from more than 30 years selling in galleries, and this East Coast Plein Air Course is the result of waves of artists reaching out for help.

Bill started outdoor painting in 1985, before the term Plein Air started getting thrown around in the art community. Back then artists didn’t have a special name for it – they just called it “going outside to paint.” Going outside just made sense since his vision was to create paintings that made it feel like you could walk through the door into his scenes.

Over 35,000 artists have already enjoyed learning from Master Artist Bill Inman since he started teaching 25 years ago, and we’re very excited to finally have Plein Air training ready to share!

Becoming a Master Artist requires consistent study and application – which is why we show you the entire process, from set-up to completed painting!

What will the East Coast Plein Air Experience do for you?

  • Drastically increase your skill level as a Plein Air painter – You’ll gain insights and skills from watching Bill’s approach to painting that will help you break down barriers and accelerate your progress as a fine artist. It’s just like you’re joining Bill on a Plein Air outing – but better because you get to watch it over and over.
  • Give you the confidence to get outside and paint – ‘Not knowing’ causes so much fear. Seeing what supplies to use, how to set up, techniques for painting in changing light, how to work in less than perfect weather, and everything else included in the course will skyrocket your outdoor painting confidence (and your overall confidence as an artist).
  • Ensure painting outside is a great experience– Bill fell in love with Plein Air before most artists knew what Plein Air meant, and his passion has continued to grow since he completed his first outdoor painting in 1985. Expert guidance can go a long way in making your first (or 100th) outdoor painting experience positive and successful.
  • Save you money, time, and aggravation – Anyone can learn to paint outside. This course is designed to help you start off right by guiding you around common pitfalls and sharing lessons learned over more than 30 years painting outside.

What’s in the East Coast Plein Air Experience?

  • High Definition Professional Outdoor Art Training – View the entire process of creating three different paintings from start to finish. The locations were carefully selected to show different aspects, challenges, and joys of outdoor painting. See every brushstroke and learn with Bill as he teaches the “how” and “why” of Plein Air.
    • Virginia Blue Ridge  – Completed in one session entirely on location as a sound study for a future large painting
    • New York Farmstead – Completed in large part on location and then refined in the studio from imagination and memory (without looking at reference photos)
    • Indiana River – Completed  by returning to the same scene on two separate days, with only the intricate bridge being finished in the studio – The structure of the bridge was changed to better fit into the composition of the painting.
  • ‘Get Started’ Training – Take advantage of Bill’s experience and learn from his mistakes – bonus video training of his supplies and set-up, as well as useful reference images.
  • Immediate Online Access – No DVDs to wait for in the mail or worry about scratching. You will have instant and lifetime access to the streaming High Definition training videos that can be viewed on any internet enabled device.

It seems crazy to give this entire course for such a low price – but one of Bill’s goals when he started Master Oil Painting was to make professional art training accessible to artists around the world, and we’re proud to have made this so affordable.

Some Common Questions (and Answers)

Is this available in DVD format?

The course is quite large, which means it would take multiple DVD’s, would add considerable cost for production, and would eventually lead to lost and scratched discs laying around artists’ homes.

The East Coast Plein Air Course is currently ONLY available online.

Can I return the training if I don't like it?

If you don’t love this training then simply let us know within 30 days and receive a full refund. We’re pretty confident you’re going to love it.

Will my access ever expire?

Absolutely not! You can login and enjoy it as many times as you want, whenever you want.

Bill is an eternal student as well – he love to learn from other artists. He can’t tell you how many times he’s purchased training of one type or another, gotten busy with life, and then come back to watch it months later only to see that it’s expired already. That’s a horrible feeling, and one we’ve made sure our members will never experience with us!

I don't use oil paint. Will this still be useful for me?

Most of our members prefer oil paint, but we have quite a few acrylic artists and even some water color enthusiasts, all of whom would happily give you raving reviews about their results. It’s hard to say confidently that this works for every medium or artist though, because that comes down to your painting and learning style more than anything else.

If it doesn’t work well for you and your preferred painting medium just let us know within 30 days and we’ll be sure you get a full refund. No reason to pay for something that isn’t helpful.

How long did this course take to create?

Over 30 Years!

There’s a story about James McNeil Whistler who was commissioned to create a painting many years ago. He walked into his studio and walked out again 15 minutes later with the finished masterpiece.

“Did you just now paint that?”

“Yes.”

“There’s no way I’m going to pay that much money for something that only took you 15 minutes!” said the man angrily.”

The artist calmly replied, “You’re not. You’re paying for the years of hard work it took to make this painting possible.”

But all stories aside, Bill took time off from painting and spent a solid 3 months working on this course full time. Plus, the training will continue to grow and improve year over year.

Will this instantly make me a professional artist?

Probably not.

Actually, it’s a pretty safe guarantee that this training by itself will not make you a professional artist anytime soon. Professional artists spend thousands of hours in front of their easel, reading books, attending workshops, and using training resources like this one. Nothing can ever replace good old fashioned hard work and time in the studio.

However, this training is packed full of helpful hints, techniques, and tips that will shave time off your journey to becoming a professional artist, and make the trip more enjoyable!

Why should I learn from Bill Inman?

He’s provided for his family as a professional artist for over 30 years, holds an MFA in studio painting, has had years of classical training from world-class instructors, has been featured in multiple magazines including Southwest Art Magazine, was winner of the Congressional Art Award, has been a teacher to over 35,000 artists, and his art training YouTube channel has nearly 2 MILLION views.

In short, he’s a really stink’in good artist and is one of the best teachers in the field today.
